Cambridge University college bell removed over slavery link

A Cambridge University college has removed a historic bell from view amid fears it has links to the slave trade.

In April, the university announced a two-year investigation into its own historical links with slavery. As reported in the Daily Telegraph It was initially hung in a belfry outside the Porter's lodge but was moved in 1994 to an accommodation block. The Demerara bell at St Catharine's College has been removed from view

"It is only right that Cambridge should look into its own exposure to the profits of coerced labour," said vice-chancellor Stephen Toope.

A large number of people who have studied at Universities leave money to those institutions in their wills, or make regular donations to help present students. I suggest that unless Cambridge University gets its act together on this issue, alumni consider carefully whether their alma mater is deserving of their money.

Every time you put sugar in your tea, you have a link to slavery, which is still going on in many parts of the world under different titles. Can we move on, Britain abolished slavery in 1804.

Will that put right the past then?

History is what it is and not what some folk would like it to be.

History is history. This proposed research and removal of the bell is a waste of time and money. Focus on the future.

It's the mark of an educated mind to entertain a thought without accepting it.

Dont suppose they will be turning one or two of the colleges into asylum seekers refuges

The whole world has had slavery in one form or another, bet no other country bends the knee

What a bunch of morons. I bet reams of slavers went through the corridors of those very colleges? Best knock the whole lot down and send the little twinkles to Ipswich instead. Great place for a new Tesco.🙄

Presumably something from the third world objected!

😂😂😂😂

tkotze789gmail1 How ridiculous.

Was this a clanger

Fuckinell!!!!!!!!

Removing it sadly can't change the past.

Fgs, just stop it!

Idiots

Who comes up with this shite? What a joke. The people who have decided to remove it, need to get a life!

Well that`s bell ends for you.

How about removing this nanny state we now live in wtf is happening to Great Britain letting any offended moaner get their ways !!!!

Without what that bell represents and has contributed from the past you wouldn’t be in a position to be so hypocritical you idiots. History is history...good or bad it doesn’t disappear.

As Henry Bonsu bonsuman said this morning on JeremyVineOn5 if a bell that had been linked to concentration camps and the Jews was removed, would we be questioning the removal. This bell may have been rung to make the slaves come to watch punishments/ hangings carried out

Pathetic decision; the bell is not actually assured to have links to slavery! You can’t eradicate history by removing historical reminders of the past. You can however, learn lessons from history & use artefacts as reminders of which are the wrong & right paths to follow!

It’s like being a Holocaust denier! Slavery happened - but it is history. Incidentally the Titanic did not sink....probably.

Can I have the bell 🔔 since Cambridge Univesity no longer wants it?

Ffs its what it is and should remain as a symbol of slavery. Removing it is like trying to erase it from history

Can I get hold of the bell 🔔 since Cambridge Univesity no longer wants it?

Well you might as well sack the boat race off as well , its offensive to me 😡 as i cant row and its not fair 😤😤 FFS its history and we learn and move on from it

At least UK led effort to abolish slavery. What was everybody else doing? Why did it take the West to force the Arab World to give up slavery?

The Liberal Elite Left have taken this place over (and some other universities)!

Rubbish.

Goodbye western civilization

Let's bulldoze Salts Mill in Bradford (a world heritage site) - it was built on the back of exploitation of textile workers

FFS!🤬🤬🤬

I believe Cambridge University should to be raised to the ground due to its connection with WHITE SUPREMACISTS , WHITE PRIVILEDGE AND SLAVE OWNERS. ALL WHITE PEOPLE SHOULD BE BANNED FROM GAINING ANY DEGREES WHICH SHOULD ONLY BE AWARDED TO BLACK PEOPLE!! IT'S ONLY FAIR

You can't change your history by removing a bell.

How pathetic !!!

Damn white people and their racist *shuffles deck and pulls out card* bells!

Yes it's very controversial. But it shouldn't be removed that ignores it's past. In my opinion, I sign or some sort of feature should be put up around it, explaining it's past.

I’m sure the building was built by slaves, lets knock it down because it’s now a slavery building and has slavery links.

What a lot of nonsense, political correctness going daft again, it's got damn all to do with the bell

This is part of history, we can't change history. It's better to learn from our past than to try to erase it. These are supposed to be educated people.

Who makes these decisions?

Remember: there was only one Slave Trade (that we ended, no less). Millions of Europeans & Africans were not cast into slavery over 00s of yrs. Entire towns were not carried away & coastlines depopulated. The Slave Trade has not reopened in modern day Barbary States ClownWorld

I say it's not enough! Demolish the whole University!!

Totally ridiculous reaction to this wringing of hands over slavery links. It is time such institutions kept true to their ethos and purpose, be proud of the greatage of the Colleges and keep students in order.

Absolutely ridiculous it’s not going to change history is it?This Political correctness has gotten out of hand!

Whose bright idea was that.....? As my history teacher always told me, the answer to the future is in the past. Deny history and be prepared to make the same mistakes again and again....

It is very worrying when one of our great educational institutions tries to deny historical fact.

Pathetic.

T O L L S B e l l the WHOM for

Dear god, this is getting old very quickly. Even though we weren’t even born back then, the beating down of the modern-day white man continues

Can’t change the past or erase history, better to keep it and learn from the past than attempt to deny it happened

When will we get it into our heads, hiding history doesnt make it dissapear. Use it as a tool to EDUCATE! we are just taking the lazy optuon here, burrying heads in the sand

Oh dear

There's gonna have to be a lot of things removed if we're going down that path!

People need to live in the present. Rewriting the past to suit a political narrative in the present is a form of mental illness.

BizPears GOOD

I would imagine a huge proportion of Cambridge Uni students are from well to do backgrounds, backgrounds whose ancestors made money from exploitation, slavery and generally using the poor to get rich. Hypercritical.

Seriously, this is ridiculous, you know there is something called history. Political correctness is erasing our history.

Called it Wilberforce.

This just in...

The monarchy has links to slavery.

Utter virtue signalling stupidity. Shall we tear down the pyramids next?

Removing it is the same as denying that it ever happened.

Ridiculous

Who, I wonder, made the decision to do this?

hand wringing par excellence..........

Oh for goodness sake!

The College make themselves look stupid by removing it based on supposition rather than proper evidence

Oh for goodness sake. It is our history & it shows how we have progressed. You stupid lot. It is our heritage & shows how things evolve & change.

White wash history. poorturnofphrase

If the liberal world spent as much time and effort in targeting slavery as it exists today (looks at Africa and ME) then Slavery would be consigned to history. Instead people from the very regions above wax lyrical over the Uks history.

Not true. Catz_Cambridge removed it over “possible” links to slavery. Firstly, nothing is proven, secondly, who cares one way or another.Just another elitist body spending more time navel gazing not doing what they should to be doing.Indoctrinating impressionable snowflakes.

Sanitising history means it will just get forgotten. Will need to remove all statues and references to the Royal family. They are the ultimate embodiment of British imperialism. Burn down Windsor Castle? Send the Saxe-Coburg-Gothas back to Germany?

Oh ffs

“Who controls the past controls the future. Who controls the present controls the past.” George Orwell, 1984 Intellectually feeble move don’t pander to them

Good.

Bloody wazzocks.

Plenty of bell ends there to cover it.

Chime of the century.

Virtually every nation has enslaved another at some point in their history. It was a major part of social evolution. Part of our journey, some of which was detestable but much of which was magnificent. But it is HISTORY so calm down n move on 🤔🇬🇧

Boycott all alumni.

We have to dissolve these snowflakes before they totally ruin this country and its history .

Ah bless, did it cause a ding-dong ?

Bloody pathetic PC rubbish. Britain abolished slavery first. Arabs and Africans STILL take slaves by the thousand!

Now Remove The Registration Requirement To Read The Journals.

Wow they have the same idiots over there as we do In th US.

It’s time to tear down Egypt’s pyramids.

what a joke, history is history .. leave the bell but put a sign up explaining stuff and how can a 1960 bell taken down

Let's pretend we didn't do these things, yo.

Why not just bull doze the whole country because of history then remove all British people because links to slavery or maybe just stop this insanity

Just to appease the Snowflakes

It's a bell, a piece of history that can't be denied or changes and of itself played no intrinsic part in slavery. Let's look at what we can do now to to create a just world going forward

Wet

Britain has historical links to slavery, that can’t be erased. The fact that we recognised it as something we didn’t want in our future and progressed is something to the proud of.

Job done.

Admirable but surely a University should be more aware of its own historical background in terms of fixtures and fittings?

It's about chime.

How about you just allow more people from ethnic minority backgrounds into your university?... Just a thought.

Cambridge University assigns white academic to look at slavery linksScepticism expressed about the decision as the university examines its role in slave trade lol. Clearly only a slave is properly qualified to examine this. So what? Does the colour of skin really matter? Seriously, how is this remotely controversial? The only issue with any researcher taking on a job is their skill-set, experience, and proof of a high academic standard in their work. This is all very silly.
