A Cambridge College has reacted to the university wide racism inquiry by removing a historic bell from view, amid fears it was used on a slave plantation.

St Catharine’s College believe that the Demerara Bell, which was donated by alumni Edward Goodland in the 1960, “most likely” came from a slave plantation.

The country has fucking lost it....

GTF

Lets hide history

What was it scared of?

It never fails to amaze me how utterly weak some of the senior managers must be in these places to constantly cave in to every demand no matter how ridiculous. What a world.

A CONSCIENCE AT LAST

Ffs. Get over it. Stop apologising for the misdeeds in history. Be thankful we have moved on and it would not happen now.

So whitewashing history? This is revisionist. History is history. Why hide?

Telegraph knows how to trigger its readers! Top work harvestinghate

Snowflakes strike again... 🤡🤡

Words escape me, least way words I feel comfortable publishing

So lame! People get butt hurt about everything. After all history is removed, they still won’t be happy. They will want white ppl removed for the ancestor slave owners being white.

Can’t they tell that only common room, job shy academics nearly give a fk

The whole world has benefitted from slavery. Every country. It was bigger in Africa than the Americas. I hold zero guilt. I will apologise ONLY to the slaves themselves. Not people who think its a stick to beat people with and who were never affected.

Might as well remove the union Jack from all flag posts, I'm sure they were hoisted up over some of these plantations. Political correctness gone mad.

Do they think it is cursed? It is a BELL.

So what it's part of history

Ridiculous

.....it either was or it wasn’t....”amid fears” is not good enough....and even it was, every bell deserves a second chance! 😂

In what way does this make amends for the errors of people who died over a century ago? Surely if it is given some context it is a good way of educating people about our past...or should we just try to eradicate anything from the past that doesn't sit well with today's morals?

News flash: all societies profited from slavery and some still do.

Once they would lead, now they are lead.

So we should banish everything associated with history and never learn from it 🤷‍♀️

Enough already.....a backlash is brewing very quickly in this country now. It’s long overdue and time to stop the cultural Marxism dead in it’s tracks before our freedoms are restricted and our speech suppressed and censored.

FFS - they'll be renaming Downing Strasse next.

Romans invaded Britain for close to 500 years ..we should boycott coffee and poo down a ditch

My ancestors were associated with slavery in the 17/18th centuries - including one Reverend who established a slave rehabilitation centre in the Seychelles. In sympathy with the College's clear aversion to my family history, I have changed my will and exhort others to do the same

This is just ridiculous! History is history so leave all alone! Will we be knocking down the Tower of London because of all the wrong 'wrong' executions etc that took place there? NO! LEAVE HISTORY ALONE! WE CAN'T CHANGE IT BUT WE MUST LEARN FROM IT!

Maybe they should just knock the whole place down; as it was, no doubt, partially funded by slave dollars. Graduates from these elite schools are making such a mess of the world, anyway, so a radical change like that might be quite helpful. 😉

Omg! History was a different country back then, why should we loose some of our history? People need to remember, that it is these things that enabled us to move on.

Better remove all the bricks as well, for the builders might have been underpaid..

What does it do to cover up a statue, remove a picture, or an item that was related to that period of history? It is more important that society learn from historical mistakes and becomes better. People's mentality needs to move on too, playing victims all the time is unhealthy.

You can't fix stupid!

The sky was also used on slave plantations, as was the energy from the sun and all of this took place on earth. Your move, imbeciles.

Bloody grow up, half wits

😂 total fuckwits.

Good

🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄

Pathetic

Pious twaddle from all the usual suspects who are desperate to somehow prove that we are all the same....Well, bell or no bell, WE’RE NOT !

Whomever dreams up this rubbish needs to give their head a shake to clear the crap out of it

Perhaps safer to pull the whole thing down just to be sure.

Stupid fools. Those who bow to the bidding of them that play the victim card, are slaves to their own conscience.

PC gone way out of context 🤦‍♂️

A shame - it’s not being used for that purpose now ! Leave it as a reminder of byegone days and how life has improved

Why not rather add a plaque that explains its history and reminds people of historic injustices!

Seriously?

Sigh

Great. It should rightly be in a museum.

So remove the evidence and pretend it didn’t happen - rewrite history - how about using it as a symbol to the slavery of stupidity .

Perhaps they ought to tear down Oxbridge buildings then, as do many were built with money made by those involved in the Slave trade. And we ought not to buy German appliances of companies that benefited in WWII. Where does this clearing out of the past stop?

I demand you remove all chimney stacks because my descendants we’re forced up them to remove soot

do they intend to remove students who’s ancestors made a killing out of the slave trade?

This country is a laughing stock around the world.

Because God forbid anyone see a bell that slaves once touched. Just acknowledge it, honour their place in our history, and move on.

And the source of funds for all the colleges at Oxbridge over 500 years? Highly dubious in today’s world. But not at the time...it’s not perfect, but it is history.

Just how pathetically weak minded can these so called academics get. We need to develop a backbone insertion procedure.

The psychology of this is defeatist! We remember Dunkirk as a battle won against adversity. Surely this should be the same mind set for all historical events that need to be faced down🤔

When the inmates running the asylum.

It's a bell.

How pathetic.

Would that be iefty snow flakes complaining

Woke off FFS

I demand reparations from the Vikings! And the Normans!

And so the editing of history continues by a generation more interested in virtue signalling than learning from the past

Pathetic !

Oh my god. That was history. We need to keep being reminded so the same mistakes are not repeated. You can't hide Germany or it's nazis they must be allowed to exist to remind us who we can and cannot trust.

Let’s turn Cambridge University into DHSS accommodation. That’ll sort out equality. Admissions for all!

We are truly heading into the dark ages of enlightenment

Absolutely ridiculous .. are we going to hide all Roman sites in Britain because slaves were used to build them? And cover up the pyramids? Pull down the Colosseum because slaves were killed there?

You are kidding ? ffs

I think Big Ben may have chimed whilst we still had some colonies - kill it with fire!

Many over the years white & black have lived in slave conditions. Look at the squalid lives of people living in the Victorian times in the inner cities, turning to prostitution to survive. Should we hide everything that comes from these rat infested times too.

Yes let’s completely erase history, regardless of meaning for dull millennial snowflakes

So if they find they have benefitted from bequests from slavery are they going to return the money/object - otherwise what is the point?

You are shitting me right? Cambridge has already fallen. Going to check whether the ravens have left the Tower of London yet.

PC ..gone mad ..associating an element of the building with something that happened c 200 years ago ..

Oh dear!

Sheer woke hysteria - one would expect better from Cambridge_Uni

When will this hysteria over a bell end?

For goodness sake

Can I have it?

How stupidly PC are we going to be as a society? Removed for 'fears' it was on a slave plantation. How about innocent until proved guilty, good people.

I know, let's burn all the history books, tear down historic buildings, and lock up descendants of sinners. Pathetic. Please shut them up. Stop giving them publicity.

More PC lunacy

Madness

Dangerous things those bells, you never know who they’re going to enslave next.

Fears? WTF?

Cambridge University assigns white academic to look at slavery linksScepticism expressed about the decision as the university examines its role in slave trade lol. Clearly only a slave is properly qualified to examine this. So what? Does the colour of skin really matter? Seriously, how is this remotely controversial? The only issue with any researcher taking on a job is their skill-set, experience, and proof of a high academic standard in their work. This is all very silly.
