Letters: Graham Gosling highlights the achievements of former students in ending the slave trade, Eric Banks says the historic plight of the working classes should also be studied, Michael Cross has a plan for profits, while Angela Sherlock takes issue with the ‘pilgrim fathers’ story

It may well turn out that in the past Cambridge University profited from colonial slavery , but it can also be argued that the university was in fact instrumental in ending the slave trade.

University of Cambridge to investigate links to slaveryThe inquiry will look at the extent to which scholars promoted race-based attitudes which helped shape opinion. That'll lead to plenty of positive outcomes. I want to investigate the French because of their role in 1066 and all that. Could be legals involved here. only the 'good' bits of British history for the gammons. Otherwise, fragile little mites that they are, how will they feel 'good' about themselves? Every race/ethnicity on earth has been subject to slavery at some point in history, so what this basically implies is that black people have no agency and need white liberal patronage in order to function.

Clearly only a slave is properly qualified to examine this. So what? Does the colour of skin really matter? Seriously, how is this remotely controversial? The only issue with any researcher taking on a job is their skill-set, experience, and proof of a high academic standard in their work. This is all very silly.
