TDSB approves move to replace current Grade 11 English course with class focusing on First Nations writers

Last Updated Wednesday, February 1, 2023 10:53PM EST

"This fulfills the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada's calls to action 63.1: make age-appropriate curriculum on residential schools, treaties, and Aboriginal people's historic and contemporary contributions to Canada a mandatory education requirement for kindergarten to grade 12 students."

The course is already available at some schools as an alternative to the compulsory Grade 11 English course, but is not mandatory. No changes are being proposed to the English program for grades 9, 10 and 12.

Students are learning the same language skills while being exposed to narratives of First Nations writers. I’m surprised the TBSB has been slow in implementing the NBE3 courses. It is about time!!!

Great work! First Nations are called first for a reason. Respect your elders - literally. tdsb

Even though NEWSTALK1010 leans to the right, I did not find any discussion about the TDSB Grade 11 Eng. course that will focus on First Nations writers. Perhaps, I missed a segment while I was busy. I did have the radio station on at home and in my car for several hours today.

Offering both wasn't an option?

Anyone in the replies or quotes want help understanding, I’m an Ontario secondary teacher. I can help explain if you have questions or concerns.

This makes no sense. Work it into the course but replacing it the way it's been described makes zero sense.

Anyone who is desperate to stick with ENG3U has the freedom to take it from a private school.

Other districts have already been teaching this course. Shakespeare isn’t for everyone. Just because it is considered a classic doesn’t mean it has to be taught forever.

Then indigenous should pay taxes to support this. It's only fair

How will this work with all the white non-immigrants who only are interested in white authors?

Like fascist BS

GUESS WHAT? INDIGENOUS IS 'INTERCHANGABLE' WITH THE WORD PEASANT LOL. This according the UN which provides the definition of Indigenous for UNDRIP - Now law in Canada (Bill C15). By definition we are therefore all being defined as peasants.

Essentially clickbait. “'I want to stress to trustees and the public that we are not swapping out Shakespeare, Dickens or (other) classic literature for Indigenous authors like Leanne Simpson or Tanya Talaga. We're simply dedicating one of the four compulsory English credits…”

I really wish people would read the article before they started moaning about this. “This fulfills the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada's calls to action 63.1”. Plus other boards made this change years ago. It’s about time the TDSB did the same.

Excellent course. My son took it at a Brantford high school last year. I read the novels along with him. We both learned a lot.

Another useless course that teaches nothing in preparation of entering the real world. The world where no 1 except for a vocal minority gives a shit about other peoples' problems. Id say teach taxes & loans but that'll show them too early that post-secondary is just a money grab.

Replacing timeless masterpieces with native dribble. Why wasn’t this done earlier?

Weep for us HMDatMI!

First Nation's writers are you serious. How about finacing, taxes, health or something that will prepare them for the future

Insanity.

WHITE MAN GUILT

tdsb is going woke better send kids to private school instead at least they will learn something

English needs to be taught using old pokemon gameboy games. Equally logical....

Those who have always had a seat at the table will say.. why not just read everyone… why don’t we have a choice.. but we didn’t hear that when we were reading The Bard’s words.. people are not ready for a just world. They prefer the status quo but that’s not good enough

I'm still waiting for my boss to ask me to write an essay for work.

How about teaching kids life skill and preparing them for workplace skills .. how is this even a priority ..

WTF. Bring back cursive first. Kids can't even sign their own name for christ sake.

My daughter took Indigenous U English course last year in grade 11. I followed the curriculum & it was very good. I’m in full support. I myself learned much about Indigenous peoples, their history & many achievements. If your child takes the course, follow along. It’s worthwhile

All kids in Kawartha Pine-ridge both Catholic & public take these classes in grade11-my son took the class this past semester & and it was eye opening for both him&us.Excellent idea for students to learn, as we now have. My son had us watch Indian Horse last weekend-very powerful

Not woke enough! We need to fire all non-first nations teachers of grade 11 English course. Only First Nations should be allowed to teach this subject.

Great job getting material. 🤡

Isn’t that already in the curriculum

?

I would do it earlier like grade 10! And grade 8

I am amazed that so many people are so passionate about Shakespeare. Please, tell me, how did his writings enrich your life?

Sounds like a upgrade to William Shakespeare

I took this class when I was in grade 11. At my highschool it was your only option for an university level grade 11 English. It was the best English class I ever took. I wished they offered it in every grade.

I don't think parents understand how bad their child's education is in our woke public schools. There is zero RIGOR...only FEELINGS. Public education is dead. Take your kids out if you can! I did, and I teach in the public ed system (ignoring all the woke BS of course).

Hello Catholic schools and private schools!!

Complete JOKE. NO backbone TDSB

Long past time to follow suit DPCDSBSchools

I’ve taught the course. It’s a regular old English course in the end. Kids liked it, I had a fun time teaching new books, and they acquired the same skills they always have in grade 11.

Or make it an optional course for those who feel compelled

Financial education is used daily for your life, on everything. But why teach them that.

Changing the colour of Kool-Aid doesn’t change the taste of sugar. Is there something or someone among First Nations who compares to Shakespeare? It’s not about reconciliation it’s about worth. cdnpoli

It's a start!

LakotaMan1 Just to let you know what Toronto is doing.

Clickbait headline as usual from CP24. But let’s head to comments for some knee-jerk reactions

Glad I finished school a while ago

More pandering by TDSB..just educate kids- that is your only mandate!!!

TDSB is hijacked by wokies. Poor kids will suffer.

Many other boards have already done this. But of course only TDSB ever gets press.

Yes let’s prepare our youth to be woke and unemployed.

Why not a little of both?

PART of THE WAR ON THE WEST:

hammersonpeters

If i ever have kids im sending them to private school

that sucks

I originally didn't like this. But I find Shakespeare pretty useless, so why not learn about native authors?

Anyone mad about this has some other issues to resolve internally. The course isn’t even mandatory so there’s really no “hidden agenda”

If this means we’re replacing hamlet with Jordin Tootoo’s book then I strongly applaud this

here come the most angry oldest white men

English shouldn’t be restricted to one peoples writing. It should teach the best from several different cultures and writers

Let’s hope this becomes province wide! There have been whispers about this happening for years but always seems to fall to the wayside.

Shouldn't TDSB be more concerned about student safety in schools and fixing that?

Interesting how the truth about genocide and stealing land makes certain people in these comments very uncomfortable lol

🤦‍♂️ woooooow !!!

well since they didn't have any alphabet, books etc they actually have no native writers unless they are using English to tell native stories. why don't we just call it what it is . grade 11 hate whitey class.

What waste!

Canada increasing allows the tail to wag the dog. It’s an embarrassment

Homeschool your kids

I thought forcing students to give up their own culture and making them learn a foreign culture was wrong?

How about a class to teach them how to organize their work, study for classes. Prepare for the real world...

Should have replaced grade 9 French with this

Sounds misleading. Are they 'replacing' OR 'focusing' the course? Def add (more) FirstNations but don't exclude other content. Focusing on 1 genre/topic in English should be for 3rd/4th yr university when you know what you want to study. No need for academic specialties in gr 11

How about reading and writing!

But why?

Opt out

Utter horse shat….

Can we focus on academia? Stop being political correct

Stupid crap.

Mandating these courses will do the opposite. Offering multiple courses to choose from based on interest is the better way to go. Public education has become a farce.

Heyhowareya heyhowareya

Wow more woke ideology. How many students in Toronto have parents born in Canada. Seriously focus on teaching English, Math and Science not liberal social ideology.

Wtf

So just to clarify we are going to force one culture on another? That’s worked out so well in the past.

Replaced Shakespeare and Dickens with Tanya Talaga. Thanks for dumbing down our kids.

Who taught FNs people about written language? We should learn from them.

whats with all the hate in the comments? its about time indigenous voices were heard. plus when I was in high-school they made us read weird ass books like the one where Noah from the Bible tore off a unicorns horn and r*ped it with it 😒

Nice. Wish they done this sooner.

Unfortunately are public education from K-12 is no longer preparing kids for the workplace, but the racket of higher education, student loans and social justice activism.

Doug Ford needs to step in here and stop this woke shit.

A people who never had a written language what language did these “First Nation writers” use? Would it be.. English?

Kinda racist.

Why is it just first nations authors? Why not a choice of Canadian authors. Stop forcing indiginous on us.

There going to rite ingrish reel gud wen det grajuate

Why. Just pick the best books. Doesn't matter who writes them.

Proof the government doesn’t care about it responsibility

Ya Shakespeare was a hack

Should be replaced with any Canadian writer Its not like there's a shortage of talent

This would help us figure out the truth. NOT

How about how to do taxes and stuff like that. Like a life class

what for? Haven’t they gotten to the kids enough? sickening, unless of course they keep all the English course amongst it.

Wake up Toronto voters. You have control over this. Vote in the next school board elections. Fire these servants of yours and replace them with people who do what you want.

rexglacer Poor kids…

Political pressure

Garbage. Total garbage. Political nonsense. I feel sorry for the kids.

Of course they do
