Trustees at the Toronto District School Board (TDSB) will be considering a motion tonight to replace the current Grade 11 English course with curriculum which instead focuses on First Nations, Métis and Inuit writers.

It asks that the director of education present a report on a plan for the gradual implementation of as the compulsory Grade 11 English credit for University, College, and Workplace in all TDSB secondary schools.

The course is already available at some schools as an alternative to the compulsory Grade 11 English course, but is not mandatory. No changes are being proposed to the English program for grades 9, 10 and 12. While the course focuses on contemporary First Nations, Métis and Inuit voices instead of European writers, it is still designed to prepare students for the compulsory Grade 12 English course.

In moving the motion at the TDSB’s Planning and Priorities Committee, trustees cited the inclusion of First Nations voices in the mandatory curriculum as being part of the implementation of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada’s recommendations and recognizing such voices as being “an integral part of Canada’s History.”

The motion asks that the director of education present a report no later than June of this year. The motion also asks that that the director explore how to embed Indigenous education into the Advanced Placement and International Baccalaureate programs at the TDSB as well.

I can see offering it as an optional course, but to have it replace a grade 11 English course? As it is, I’ve noticed that a lot of people don’t know how to spell or just get mixed up on which way to spell a word…I see it every day… To take away an English class

Please don’t allow the TDSB to teach Indigenous authors. They’ll only ruin them.

They need a class that teaches them hard work cuz there’s a lack of that coming up the pipe

Please noooo.

Should be able elective as opposed to replacing the English course. Think of the many immigrants who benefit greatly from the regular course. It is much more valuable and needed in our ethnically diverse society.

Why not do both and start it earlier? Have it span out a few years.

Why does it have to be either/or?

Will it be taught by First Nations teachers? You would think it should be.

That's what we have in Ottawa. Why isn't the province the same everywhere?

Why? Why an entire course. First Nations writers should be PART of a course not the entirety. Give me a break. Let’s get back to basics like spelling, grammar, punctuation and vocabulary. REAL life skills.

So do they need to be good writers at least or is this just another slap in the face for Canadians

Ya like that will help me get a job

Why and how is that gonna benefit our children? Seems really silly and extremely irresponsible. Just stop

Another vote for home schooling.

A modern literature course with an ethnic angle, basically. Would be hard pressed to find much pre-20th century.

Who needs to read Woolf, Faulkner,Munro,Dostoevsky,Roth,Salinger,Stendhal,O’Connor,Hesse,Rilke, Achebe, Homer, when you have Talaga.

Great. Now we're cancelling English. When is this crap going to end.

We shouldn’t be teaching any bs.

I mean instead of focusing on teaching about first Nations writers, interesting as it may be, could we try teaching them something of use in the real world first? I'd like to see a grade 11 student understand punctuation or maybe spelling. I know it's a lot to ask but maybe math.

Instead of just Grade 11, why not incorporate it into every grade’s English course

depends on what the objective of ENG3U is. is it for students to learn about different forms of literature, or is it more learning how to write effectively?

Thankfully I pulled my child out of the woke TDSB. Every parent should do the same as quickly as possible. It’s not going to get any better at the tdsb

It is “Focus”, by ending up nobody cares.

🤢

Holy shit lol

This could very easily promote opportunity for hate towards the indigenous community by those who may not be up to this idea.... why not include both,

Why not make a unit on First Nations Writers in English class mandatory instead?

Did anyone actually ask a grade 11 teacher what the change would entail?

Can we all agree that enough is enough with first nations? Teach what happened in history class and then MOVE ON

As is always the case, the replies from everyday people make more sense than the policies crafted by school boards. School boards and the Ministry have virtually killed education.

I'm not bashing it but we should also teach students the basic fundamentals of life.

Replace that stupid Shakespeare crap

Absolutely NOT!!!! Allow it to be optional but not mandatory

Ok why not just include some and mix it up. What is up.

There are certainly enough great writers for it - the literary product coming out of our Indigenous communities is incredible.

Another horse crap move by that board. They should be more concerned with keeping schools safe. What a useless PC SJW organization.

Dumb down our society in the name of the woke

Never a better time to leave Toronto. The rot is taking over.

“A healthy tree cannot produce bad fruit, nor can a diseased tree bear good fruit” -Jesus

Should be an elective, not a substitute for G11 English

How does this help applying to higher Education? Eliminating English literature can only hinder students with higher aspirations than HR or liberal arts.

So you wanna replace teaching the greatest works of literature all time to more modern ones because…why? Diversity?

Indian writers? Lol jibber jabber

They should replace the grade 12 course with something like this, and they need to revamp the grade 10 history and civics curriculum to focus on indigenous perspective. This alone is weak.

jordanbpeterson

Can't be worse them Shakespeare. Useless crap. Now books like of mice and men, to kill a Mockingbird, the outsiders...those were good high school reads

Why replace it that’s stupid. Just add on

And TDSB also needs vent and fund the resources for teachers to teach the new course

Why can't they be taught side-by-side? Why does it have to be one or the other? Or why not make it an elective? I remember taking Canadian English Lit when I was in high school, but I also learned about Shakespeare. How things have changed 😔

How uses Shakespeare in the real world? This would be a good move imo

We have been doing that for a couple of years in our board

I hated reading Shakespear, but I think it is important to read. I also think student can read more than one book in semester so add a Native written book as well.

How about adding to the curriculum instead of replacing

Why not. The ability to write, speak, and demonstrate understanding of the English language is subpar for many students.

🤦‍♂️

Why not both? Oh yeah, because that would make sense, and it's the TDSB.

Do both! They’re equally important

We might as well have Randy Winestien running our education system. What left wing Woke Turkey came up with this stupid idea. Why not offer a spend the day on the reservation course. I keep warning everyone about CRT and other harmful things being taught in schools here. Wake up

Maybe you can have a class on how to cut the scalp off a human head as well.

Grade 11 has multiple English courses so which one

It’s a wonderful idea! It should be part of all English courses in elementary and high school. Kudos to TDSB.

So just to clarify we are going to force one culture on another? That’s worked out so well in the past.

The course should include both western and First Nation writers and across all grades.

Why not focus on ALL writers... this force fed crap is what makes people resentful

Doug Ford should step in here and force an end to this woke shit.

These people are so lost lol. That does nothing.

Wtf

The school board elections need to be much better publicized in the news. Cp24 you need to do better . We need to interview these people.

THIS is what causes racism.

Just get the lndian students to read Never Cry Wolf by Farley Mowat .

Incorporate, but do not replace. Native writers are but one group, there are many groups. Be fair to all, and incorporate the best literature regardless of class, creed, or religion.

Teach them how to spear bison while you're at it

Can't imagine what a course focusing on first nation's writers would be. Native history I can wrap head around. Glad we're sending the youth off with the best tools available for their future.

How about a course on common life skills that are actually useful such as how to file income tax,how to jump start a car, change a tire , budget, build credit,do laundry, cook ect

HELL NO WTF

Kids are going to be bored

Why? Kids should learn and focus on learning from the best writers & their works. If a First Nation writer is among the best in the world then that is ok but do not make students learn from an inferior writer just because of their heritage or background.

A better idea: include reading, writing, grammar, spelling, vocabulary and punctuation in all English classes across all grades. Also include First Nations authors on the reading lists for all grades. A single course is not inclusion. I volunteer to chair TDSB.

Dedicate half of the school year to each one

Because by then they can't speak, read or write English anyways.

No. Add first Nation writers but don't remove any curriculum.

Shouldnt parents have a say in this?

Why replace it? Why not just do both?

Why?

Oh this is a bad one. More liberal virtue signalling focused on ABSOLUTE NONSENSE. THIS ISNT HISTORY CLASS IF YOU WANT TO LEARN ABOUT ABORIGINALS GO TAKE ANOTHER COURSE THIS IS ENGLISH!

Indigenous authors are the most vital, exciting, and important writers in this country today. There has been an explosion of Indigenous talent in every discipline and their work should be a major part of every curriculum nationwide. Catch up, settlers, you are being left behind!

That will come in huge when looking for a job!

Both are equally important

I’m indigenous and even I think this is stupid…accommodate everyone not just one or the other

Students should have the choice of selected Canadian writers not just indiginous.

fantastic! we need more of this 💜

Everyone in moderation.

Except most students in TDSB aren't Indigenous, and will never learn about their own heritage.

WTF? Just do both and make it mandatory

Why?

Good idea . Perhaps replace Mathematics with a class focused on skinning whale blubber and whisky production is required as well .

Focus on both....

Why not study both Shakespeare and indigenous writers? WHT just one or another?

DDSB already does this. I assumed it was province wide. Excellent decision.

Why are students learning how to be losers? The fittest won Move on
