Trustees at the Toronto District School Board have voted in favour of a motion to replace the current Grade 11 English course with curriculum which instead focuses on First Nations, Métis and Inuit writers.

Last Updated Wednesday, February 1, 2023 10:04PM EST

"I want to stress to trustees and the public that we are not swapping out Shakespeare, Dickens or classic literature for Indigenous authors like Leanne Simpson or Tanya Talaga. We're simply dedicating one of the four compulsory English credits each and every high school student must have to graduate to an Indigenous education course," he said.

A number of trustees also spoke in support of the motion, saying it is a critical step and opportunity of enrichment for students. It asks that the director of education present a report on a plan for the gradual implementation of as the compulsory Grade 11 English credit for University, College, and Workplace in all TDSB secondary schools.

While the course focuses on contemporary First Nations, Métis and Inuit voices instead of European writers, it is still designed to prepare students for the compulsory Grade 12 English course.

How about tdsb address all the bullying going on in their schools

Try teaching business, money matters, investing, real estate. Things people need to know to survive. No disrespect to the indigenous community,

Not so long ago researchers found a tribe in Amazon forest that could count only till three - and 'many' after 3. I wonder does Brazilian kids study that tribe culture?

Unbelievable. What’s going on with TDSB’s literacy in school. I heard they also eliminated spelling in the past, which I hope is not true.

Peanutsmom03 Why does the Truth & Reconciliation Commission of 🇨🇦call for young ppl to learn about what Adults (govt, religion & native communities) have not worked out after all these years? Kids are not the ones to reconcile it. More kicking the can down the road 🤦‍♂️

So just to clarify we are going to force one culture on another? That’s worked out so well in the past.

Of course they did

Wouldn't mind at all, it could even spark some more intrigue into literature for me

Good, Shakespeare is the worst. It's not meant to be read and studied but rather watched.

People keep saying 'Optional' It's not optional, it's replacing grade 11 English which is required to graduate HS.

And then …bring back Grade 13 and possibly add a 14 in there.

What’s unclear to me is whether this means indigenous writers exclusively make up the content of this year of studies. What does ‘focus on’ mean?

Will they learn the story of Big Chief , No Fart ?

They should be voting to add, business courses, how to do your taxes, understanding pay vs lifestyle, career path planning, interpersonal communication, problem solving, and anything else anyone wants to add that is life skill relevant instead of current time wasters!

As an elective?

Because that will better prepare you for the future?

Replacing an essential class with FN writers?

More woke nonsense.

Why

Disgusting

As long s it's optional, who cares!?

The thing is a lot of the stuff in the textbooks you see is not the reality that occurred, personally would not mind learning about indigenous history if it was based on the truth rather than the regular stuff we hear about day to day.

There has to be a way to do both, English should not be replaced and indigenous stories should be added. It's like taking away math and adding coding... Need both.

Good! English was the worst subject I had to take and English teachers are the most condescending of them all. The curriculum was outdated.

I'm so glad I don't have kids

That’s why if you have a lot of money put your kids in private schools and avoid all these woke school boards.

TDSB is going to teach Ontario students how to repeat history Teach them how to lose so when winners like Russia decide to invade Canada, it will be a walk in the park again, just like 400 years ago Get real Stick with English, the language of business around the world

Yeah why focus on the culture that built this nation? Peoples feelings are hurt, so obviously their works are better.

Math will soon be replaced by counting the number of genders. How long until those woke teachers make drag shows part of the curriculum? You need to be 18 to go into a strip joint, but it’s fine for weirdos in dresses to dance in front of kindergarteners.

Our children are at risk. Wake up Ontario. You’re children are being molested by the Ontario education authorities without your consent. Vote Blue next election so we can stamp out this scourge on Ontario.

Stop with the inflammatory bs. It is replacing 1 of 4 credits. Kids will still learn Shakespeare etc. Read the statement

What a total disgrace the TDSB is. Parents we are losing this war against the Woke Leftists. Where’s Doug Ford on this. Are children are already being lied to with teachings of Critical Race Theory, the rewriting of history.

Remember enjoying the indigenous history that “was” taught. Always a fan. But didn’t know anything about residential schools! Shocked to learn about it decades later.

JBradshaw01 Good. The current English curriculum is sleepy and dull, full of plays from the 1950s and books from the 1970s and 80s. Nothing decent has been written, apparently, in the past 30 years. Bring on contemporary Indigenous authors!

No one speaks English in Canada anymore anyways. Don’t see a problem with this

When are we going to make Hindi mandatory?

Thats great, our board already has this option and its an amazing course

That’s awesome. I was in grade 11 back in 05-06 and I would have enjoyed this course as an option. First Nations writers & their stories are an important part of Canada on a whole level.

Can we replace these trustees because absolutely NOT!!! Scrap the Shakespeare shit

I cannot see a problem with this. They can shift focus to stories told about this place instead of Europe. Still study the same things, use more relevant writing. this is gonna be too “Woke” for some but English/French in Canada should use primarily Canadian or Indigenous text.

Ok great! Now make sure teachers have the resources they need to teach the course

No thanks

Is this a fucking joke?

Ummm
