Former homeless student overcomes extraordinary odds to graduate from Georgetown University.

Rashema Melson is no stranger to adversity. The 23-year-old, who had lived for three years in a Washington, D.C. shelter, made headlines as the valedictorian of Anacostia High School’s Class of 2014 with a full scholarship to Georgetown University.

Melson spoke with ABC News last week, sharing her path to graduation and some of the hardships she endured throughout her life. She even, at one point, lived in an abandoned house. Melson said she used to wake up to the sting of bed bug bites, constantly changed schools and ate food straight from the can because there were no plates.

Reading and education helped Melson focus and imagine a different life for herself, and the support of her friends motivated her to finish her studies. She left Georgetown after her freshman year to get married, and when the marriage didn't work out, it was her friends who successfully urged her to return to Georgetown and complete her degree."Just know that your blessing is there waiting for you, you just have to go get it," she said.

Well done.

The kind of story that should be highlighted more often.

SO GREAT!!!

That is Great!

that’s sad

Adversity conquered! Adversity

Who cares

I'm happy and all she's graduating, but nobody should have to overcome homelessness. That, and this is a super exception. Chill with the bootstraps porn

Inspiring....good job!! Looking forward, never give up.

Wish you all the best

While others have their parents write a million dollar check and get them on an athletic scholarship they dont deserve

Georgetown expels two students caught up in college admissions scandalGeorgetown Univ. expelled 2 students in connection with the massive college admissions scandal — the same day one of them filed a federal lawsuit in hopes of blocking his ouster. “In his lawsuit, Adam Semprevivo said he had an SAT score of 1980 — 640 in reading, 640 in math and 700 essay...and thus didn't need any shady strings to be pulled on his behalf at Georgetown.” These SAT scores are WAY below average for Georgetown. He must really want to go G’town. Kinda hard to believe that dad filed a bogus admissions application and paid $400k in bribes ... and the son didn't know a darn thing?
