'When confronted with the test the universe presented me with, I didn’t see any other choice but to act,' tweeted Keanan Lowe, a school security guard who also coaches football and track.

Police are positioned outside Parkrose High School Parkrose High School during a lockdown after a man armed with a gun was wrestled to the ground by the school's football and track coach. By Jacob Bogage Jacob Bogage National sports writer and blogger Email Bio Follow May 18 at 5:19 PM A high school football and track coach who once starred at wide receiver for the Oregon Ducks is being hailed as a hero for stopping a shooting a high school in Portland.

When I signed up to be a Security Guard, Football and Track & Field Coach for Parkrose High School, I did so to guide and coach young people whose shoes I had once been in. I had no idea, that I would one day have to put my life on the line like I did yesterday for my students. Students alerted school officials that a classmate had displayed troubling behavior in recent days, intimating a desire to hurt himself and acquire firearms, according to The Oregonian.

Parkrose HS seniors Preston Anderson, 17, & Sair Nunez, 19 said they were in their government class in the Fine Arts building when a male classmate came in with a gun and was subdued by Keanon Lowe, a coach at the school. pic.twitter.com/aKU4zPj8XD As a redshirt senior, he was named the team’s “most inspirational player” and earned a reputation as a fan favorite for unselfish blocking habits and jubilant celebrations of teammates’ accomplishments.

Good for him, but this should not be something people have to worry about ... but ‘merica

He should not have to.

.

Students and most adults should never be allowed to have access to weapons.

Apparently Mr. Lowe is an alumnus of Jesuit High School in Portland.

Unfollowing. Blocking. Not sharing anymore stories. Damn your limited readings per month.

You do not have to be a good guy with a gun to stop a bad guy with a gun. You just have to be a Good Man to do so!

Wasn’t just armed, but fully prepared for a Columbine-copycat mass murder of teenagers. Jfc can we get the names and images of the original killers off the internet or something?!?

But hey we only care about the unborn

I fail to see how this story could have been improved by someone else having a gun. Although I'm sure lots of people will try to tell me a shootout between armed parties would have been more American.

Everyone should be thanking this hero. Thank you thank you

Just another day in the great America

Cool, he should be recognized for what he did. USAToday should also mention that this was a suicide attempt and not an attempted mass shooting though. The kid was saved from himself by Lowe and that's commendable.
