Angela Womack is known for her passion for teaching and for fashion.

MONTGOMERY, Ala. - There are signs plastered all over the doors of Carver High School emphasizing the school’s dress code. Inside Angela Womack’s classroom, her lessons on how to dress for success are a little more subtle.“I do know some of the students look forward to seeing what Miss Womack is wearing, but I try not to make it a distraction,” she said. “For me, it’s about professionalism. My teachers always dressed to impress, that’s something I saw, and that’s something that stuck with me.

These are some indirect lessons taught at Carver High School in her classroom. Her more direct discussions are all about English and literature. Quoting the school’s namesake, George Washington Carver, she said she loves teaching high schoolers. She’s been an educator for 13 years now, teaching in Virginia, Selma, and now Montgomery.

“I love English because it’s our spoken language, and it gives us the opportunity to express ourselves,” she said. “With high schoolers, I really get to know and understand my students. They’re at the age where they can express themselves more intently, more deeply, and more passionately.” She encourages her students to express themselves in writing by keeping daily journals. While some of the kids may look forward to Miss Womack’s attire, she looks forward to seeing their smiling faces every day.

“No two days are alike, all the students are different, with different personalities,” she said. “That’s why I love what I do.”
