FAIRBANKS, Alaska - On March 19, the Fairbanks North Star Borough School District Board of Education voted twice to close Ben Eielson Jr./Sr. High School each voting passing with opposition.the potential closure of two schools. Since then, residents have rallied, marched and spoken against the proposed closures. For now three of the four schools remain untouched.
While some board members expressed sorrow in the decision, they did eventually vote to close Ben Eielson. While their work on the budget was not yet finished, Brandy Harty, the president of the board motioned to move on with the agenda. Specifically, to move onto the same vote, but this time for a different agenda item. That agenda item was again, whether or not to close the school, but it was a separate item due to requirements set by the Alaska Dept. of Education and Early Development .
Despite his opposition, the motion was passed and the board moved forward with the next vote. Again the vote passed 5-1 with Lopez and Doran both voting against the action. Ben Eielson Jr./Sr. High School will now close at the end of the school year.
