The crash occurred around 1:59 p.m. as the bus was traveling west on the highway with students from Tom Green Elementary who were returning from a field trip to the Bastrop Zoo. "These pumps are all metal... they're very, very heavy, so it's like trying to stop a train," said Jorge Chavez. He's been working as a cement pump truck driver for 15 years with a company out of El Paso. "I've been on a couple of close calls," said Chavez, "if I'm going 65 , it will take me at least about 100 feet to come to a complete stop."
