Strikes by teachers in West Virginia, Oklahoma, Los Angeles, Oakland, Calif., and Denver underscore the fact that this crisis is not bound by region or ideology. Instead, they reflect our national failure to value educators and pay them what they deserve. The “pay gap” between what teachers earn and what people with similar educations earn is creating disastrous consequences. Teachers are leaving their dream jobs because they can’t make ends meet. Bright college graduates are not choosing this path of service because they need to pay their student loans. Rural schools are unable to fill teaching vacancies while urban schools struggle with high rates of turnover.
The plan will also include a multibillion-dollar investment in evidence-based programs that elevate the teaching profession. Half of this funding would be dedicated to historically black colleges and universities and other minority-serving institutions, because more than 30 percent of all black teachers, and more than 40 percent of all Hispanic teachers, graduate from those schools.

How to fix it. Has anyone asked themselves why we are subsidizing an outdated system of education & paying trillions of $$ to brick and mortar institutions? Because Democrats wont allow to move into the future. We now have something called the internet. We could have the best....
Before we pay a dime more for education, we spend the 2nd most per child in the world, we need to diminish the role unions play, and local and state dems out of education. Also address the value system kids are showing up with!

Pew Research has teachers solidly in the middle class, $55k to $110K depending on area of the country. They're not getting rich, but the idea that they need a big influx of federal money is absurd.

I started out teaching making 32k a year and working 187 day. So I made $171 a day. Sure I want more money but when you say teachers are under paid. I ask really for the time they work?
Iam 60 yrs old have no kids or grandchildren in school but iam still for education for the rest of the country our gas prices are 2.85 cents a gallon and mich wants another 45 cent on the gas,what about us don't we count !!!

laurenonthehill The states have no money. 77 cents of every $$ in property taxes where I live already goes to education. Unfunded pension liabilities are through the roof across the nation. And what about the cities/towns where this 'pay gap' you mention does not exist?
No, not really. My company gives me 2 wks of vacation annually + I acrew so much time a pay period. I don't get a 2-3 month vacation.

It sure is! Have family members in the public school district, with master degrees, and hearing about their pay level kills me. Definitely needs to rise, along with solid annual increases!

Raising the salaries of public school teachers is the surest way to NOT get elected president.
Our teacher performance gap is a failure. End teachers unions ability to negotiate tenure and have local school boards hire and fire based on actual performance.
