A lawsuit calls on Harvard University to turn historical images of enslaved people over to a woman who claims to be a descendant of the man and girl who were photographed in 1850.

A copy of a photo shows an 1850 daguerreotype of Renty, an enslaved man. Tamara Lanier, of Norwich, Conn., who says the man is her family's patriarch, sued Harvard on Wednesday, demanding the school turn over the photo and pay damages.

“The claim is simple,” said Josh Koskoff, one of Lanier’s attorneys. “You took something. It doesn’t belong to you. It belongs to me. And I want it back.” Harvard spokesman Jonathan Swain responded Wednesday, “The university has not yet been served, and with that is in no position to comment on this lawsuit filing.”

Ben Crump, another of Lanier’s attorneys, called on Harvard to denounce slavery and white supremacy “if they have the courage.”

Everyone made money from the slaves. But the blacks didn’t!!!!

I studied these daguerrotypes in college; I've held them in my hands. Professor Louis Aggassiz commissioned these daguerrotypes, of an enslaved black man and his daughter, stripped naked, in an attempt to prove that blacks were a separate and inferior 'species.' 1/3

.If she can be found, plagiarist Meredith McIver would be a TREASURE TROVE of info – she’s “heard everything, and she’s taken good notes,” said Trump. And if she CAN’T be found, then that’s an even bigger story – about the failure of the press in ’16.

The left is imploding. The slave narrative is a desperate attempt to attract POC to vote democrat. We rather vote GOP for a real liberator realDonaldTrump. We love jobs not mobs. KAGTrump2020🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸

What exactly are you doing right now, if not the exact same?

Would digitizing them and making them freely available and open source satisfy the lawsuit, or is this about owning the physical photos?

These pictures should absolutely be returned to the families of these two ancestors. End of story.
