As Labour pledges to impose 20% VAT on fee-paying institutions, squeezed parents are getting priced out. One mother speaks to the i about the impact on her family

I feel so guilty, though, because it’s not our daughter’s fault that her school fees are rising. She’s so happy with her friends, likes lots of her teachers and is thriving there doing art and music, which she loves. She’s alsoIt’s been money well spent, but now I worry the change for her from private to state will be a serious shock. We’re talking about keeping her on until the academic year if we possibly can, so that she can at least have the full year and not be disrupted halfway through.

Ideologically, yes, I’d love to say that we’ll just send her to the local school, come what may, but in reality the situation is more complicated. Our local catchment school is performing really badly at the moment, according to Ofsted and according to some of my friends whose kids go there. Obviously there are brilliant London state schools where any child would be lucky to have an education, but we don’t live near one. So we will need to try to buy a house nearer to one, which is itself a huge financial challenge, because those homes are going to be even pricier.

All in all, we’ve been willing to cut back on holidays, nice clothes, dinners out, theatre trips and all that sort of stuff to give our daughter this education, but soon it will be so incredibly tight that it won’t feel worth it anymore and it’ll create so much tension and stress. We know our daughter will be ok, she is lucky, and we will do whatever we can for her. All the same, even though we are privileged in the scheme of things, it’s still very stressful to realise you’re being priced out of the school you send your child to – and it’s going to be a wrench to tell her she’s leaving.
