An increased police presence and and a post\u002Dgame tailgate party by the University of Ottawa are part of a new strategy to control crowds.

This year’s game happens Sunday, Oct. 1. Police and city officials are cautiously optimistic that a series of strategic planning changes — including a more aggressive police presence in Sandy Hill all weekend long and a sanctioned post-game tailgate party on the uOttawa campus — will limit the mayhem.

“We recognize there’s a snowball effect to this, on social media,” said Action Sandy Hill committee member Cathy Major. “Something can start with a simple text, like ‘there’s a party on XYZ on this street’. Last year, around 8 o’clock, you could see cars roaming the neighbourhood, looking for spots to party.” Russell Avenue, between Templeton Street and Somerset East, is referred to as “Ground Zero”.

In previous years, a sanctioned uOttawa pre-game tailgate party has been held at the Sandy Hill Arena on Mann Avenue, with school buses going to and from the game at TD Place. Student union groups will encourage students to stay on campus or to head to the Byward Market, but it would be naïve to believe the parties won’t extend to Sandy Hill, home to numerous student residences.

Ottawa police, Ontario Provincial Police officers, paramedics and city by-law officers patrolled Sandy Hill during last year’s post-game parties.Beginning Monday, the groups associated with Panda Game festivities were to kick off a door-to-door campaign in Sandy Hill. Plante, the city councillor who also lives in the neighbourhood, agrees. She says relishing the Ottawa-Carleton football rivalry is part of the university experience.

A year ago, former Rideau-Vanier Coun. Mathieu Fleury said that the cost shouldn’t be passed on to the city’s taxpayers and should be covered by the universities and the Ottawa Sports and Entertainment Group.
