Ruby is Sex Education S4's standout character.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Summary Sex Education season 4 ends with a brand new best character — Ruby Matthews. Mimi Keene has been in the Netflix coming-of-age series since it debuted in 2019, playing the stereotypical popular mean girl in Moordale Secondary. In earlier seasons, she has had her own moments, but nothing big enough to stand out. That changed in Sex Education season 3 when he started an unexpected romance with Otis Milburn.

While Sex Education is technically an ensemble series, its main players have been clear from the start. Its main trio — Otis, Maeve, and Eric Effiong, have been at the center of every big arc throughout its run on the platform. Aside from their collective plots, each one of them has had great personal narratives. However, Sex Education also likes diversifying its storytelling by putting focus on smaller characters.

How Ruby Became Sex Education's Best Character Despite being mostly overlooked throughout her stint in the show, Sex Education has been able to easily make Ruby relevant in season 3 with her relationship with Otis. Season 4 leans on that by developing her character beyond her romantic ties to Otis. As she loses her usual Moordale friends when she transfers to Cavendish, Ruby goes through significant character development when she is forced to confront her history with O.

Sex Education spent the majority of its run tackling Otis and Maeve's respective storylines, but they weren't as efficiently done as how it executed Ruby's in seasons 3 and 4. Aside from their often frustrating romance, Otis and Maeve's arcs were also diluted by other plots. Meanwhile, since Ruby's personal narrative played out in just the last two seasons, it's easier to appreciate the growth that the character underwent.

Ruby Being Sex Education's Best Character Hurt Maeve & Otis' Romance Otis and Ruby's relationship was meant to just be temporary. Sex Education primarily did it for shock value, especially since he continued to struggle with Maeve dating Isaac in season 3. However, the pairing quite easily became a fan-favorite, with their fans arguing that they are better together than Otis and Maeve. Sex Education season 4 actually further proves this.
