For years, fans of the coming-of-age series had been looking forward to Netflix paying off its promise of a full-blown love story between Otis and Maeve. Despite the characters' romantic potential, Sex Education took a long while before it finally made them an official couple.
Ending Sex Education season 1 with them not getting together made sense. Netflix was keeping fans invested. However, it botched the couple's story when it overextended the will-they/won't-they dynamic. Season 2's ending was so frustrating that it may have been the point where Otis and Maeve's romance jumped the shark. Making it worse was season 3, which waited all the way until its final stretch for their much-anticipated first kiss.
Meanwhile, Otis seemed perfectly content living in Moordale. He didn't discuss any intentions of wanting to get out and explore the bigger world. It's likely due to his relatively more comfortable life in suburbia compared to Maeve's. He lived in a big house with his mom. He didn't have any financial problems since Jean was a renowned therapist. In short, it didn't seem all that bad to spend the rest of his life in his hometown.
