Former Sydney school teacher Chris Dawson has been found guilty of having a sexual relationship with one of his underage students in the 1980s.He did not deny having a relationship with the student but claimed it occured after she was 17Dawson faced a judge-alone trial in the NSW District Court, where he pleaded not guilty to one count of carnal knowledge of a girl aged between 10 and 17.
The judge said AB had not embellished and made concessions where appropriate, describing her as "a thoughtful witness who gave her evidence in a matter-of-fact and forthright way". Dawson is currently serving a 24-year jail sentence after he was last year found guilty of murdering his first wife, Lynette Simms, who vanished in 1982.During the trial, which began in May, AB told the court she was "singled out" at school by Dawson before intimacy escalated throughout 1980.They would "kiss and canoodle" during weekly fitness classes, the court heard.
Public Defender Claire Wasley told the court the judge was not required to assess Dawson against "contemporary moral standards", but rather those that existed in the 1980s.
