Convicted wife killer Chris Dawson has been found guilty of engaging in an unlawful sexual relationship with one of his students in Sydney in the 1980s, with the former teacher muttering an expletive five times when the verdict was delivered.
He did not deny having a sexual relationship with the girl, but maintained the teenager was not aged 16 or in his sports coaching class when the relationship became physical. Dawson, who had watched proceedings from Long Bay correctional centre, occasionally shook his head during the lengthy judgment when the complainant’s evidence was recited. After the verdict was delivered, he said “f---” to himself five times in quick succession.
Two cards Dawson gave to the student also corroborated this timeline and were “powerful evidence”, the judge said. One, a Christmas card given in 1980, referred to her as “petal” and signed off “love always, God”. The second, given to her on her 17th birthday in early 1981, called her “the most beautiful girl in the world”.
