Fact-checking claims by Education Secretary Gillian Keegan and teachers' union boss Mary Bousted.

The pay increases - which came into effect in September 2022 - varied with less experienced teachers getting larger percentage increases.Ms Keegan referred to "newly experienced teachers", but that's not an official category applied to staff.

The pay band for qualified teachers in England with the least experience is M1. They will see their pay go up 15.9% as they move up to the next band M2 in 2022-23 which you would expect to happen to almost all of them after the first year.So she's right about this specific group of teachers who made up around 5% of teachers in England in 2022-23.But the education secretary went on to talk about experienced teachers.

She said 40% of them would be getting "up to 15.9%", but in fact none of them will be getting that much - they will be getting 9% or 10% if they move up a pay band this year. We asked the Department for Education about the evidence for her claim and were told that the less experienced teachers who could get 15.9% and the 40% of experienced teachers who could get 9% or 10% are indeed separate groups.

with everybody wanting 15-20% pay rises may i ask,When the cost of living eventually starts dropping will all these people forego pay rises or just keep expecting the money tree to keep sprouting.

Hopefully not

Disgrace if true

Our children’s education has already suffered during lockdown so this action just makes things more difficult. With 12 weeks holidays annually and a gold plated pension teachers should show some social responsibility and a sense of duty towards the children they teach

Pathetic journalism.

Yeah but they are worth far more than you, as for your children they have to stay at home and wait for these scumbags to go back to work.

What about teaching assistants GillianKeegan

Some already have!
