Businesses need employees with soft skills. Are universities doing enough to teach them?

There is also a huge opportunity for colleges to restore their relevance by helping to fill the learning gap many managers face when they are promoted into a leadership role. Today, people often take on leadership positions without much formal management training. Often,, even though they haven’t developed the skills needed to lead a team. But if more schools invested in teaching those skills, organizations would have a larger amount of candidates with leadership potential.

In short, we believe that market demands clearly call for a paradigm change. More and more students are spending more and more money on higher education, and their main goal is largely pragmatic: to boost their employability and be a valuable contributor to the economy.

Discover how to attract, hire, develop, and keep talented people who will grow and thrive throughout their employee journey.

As someone studying an MBA at the moment I can say that it is preparing me to pivot from the military to industry. It would appear the ROI is subject dependent.

On a broad scale basis, that is a hard NO!!

We try to... believe me... unfortunately increasing numbers of learners are woefully ill prepared for the real world

I know of one. nexford provides students the opportunity and experience to acquire these skills. Click here 👉 to learn more about the NXU experience. NexfordUniversity HRwithEM Leadership Management CareerDevelopment

I don't think so. In real life, hard skill is the key, soft skill is secondary.

Agree!

AGREED!

Well said! Preparing students for the workforce today involves improving their intelligence, resiliency, integrity, and much more!

How can a continent that is undernourished and suffering from a lack of adequate food, alternating between natural and man-made problems, succeed? The world is entering globalization

That is the job of families, media, and society. Empathy can only be thought by action, resilience too. Maybe univ could teach integrity and coachability, but with what resources? If the same prof who abuse students/postdocs, can really teach about integrity?

😑

Leadership is not a skill that can be learned, decision making can be learned.

Before anything be humble, listen to your elders. Keep your nose clean, your chin down. Academia isn’t there only to polish managers. As Paulo Freire said, we can only form brutes since before the empire. We train pros so they are a more prepared work force. 💎For the workplace

Universities are trying to teach soft skills. However the curriculum are too hard to accommodate fast changes that are essential to build a culture of soft skills within the academic ranks. Soft skills are not always correlated with academic merit that is required to teach

The chair of the Film Department when I was at the University of Central Florida was evil. Subsequently jailed for soliciting a 12 yr old. UCF swept it under the rug. Teaching “empathy, and integrity”? Ha!

Great point. I absolutely agree that these are important skills for students to learn that will better enable them to interact with peers and succeed in the modern workplace.

You forgot compassion.

No. Everyone budgets, everyone pays taxes, everyon prepares for the future with pension schemes - they don’t discuss this at any schools

Huuummm! The New Scientific Revolution in action! The era of adoption of Cognitive and Behavioral Sciences in action!

This article and concept needs a refresh especially post-pandemic. The skills have evolved along with the workforce demands, etiquette, and preparation.

Teaching by example goes a long way. Can we do it? What’s our track record? Students watch what we do and don’t limit themselves to what we say.

Surely ei, resilience, empathy, integrity, and learnability are all key leadershipskills?

Unfortunately, our current education system focuses on building hard, technical skills which were useful in the XX Century. Tech and digital revolution will impact education as well. Focus will be on soft skills (7 C’s), connecting the dots, thinking.

Our planet/humanity are evolving into forms of consciousness fields - we must become aware of the meaning and how group consciousness impacts our daily life. We must demonstrate effective interdependence experiences within community as a UNIVERSAL Creation Spiritual Principle.
