Bethami Dobkin: Race is part of a holistic approach for the military and higher education

The Supreme Court building in Washington.Last weekend I had the opportunity to share drinks and conversation with three veterans who had gathered in celebration of Veterans’ Day. All were career service members.

Their experiences as veterans form one very significant part of how they see themselves, and how others see them. If I had asked Pat, one of the African-American women, which was more important - being a veteran, being Black, or being a woman? - she probably would have trouble answering. All three identities have shaped, and continue to shape, her experiences and opportunities. All three identities are valuable in the contributions they make to defending our country.

For years, colleges and universities that practice holistic admissions review have considered all information and experiences that a student shares on their application. This may include race-aware admissions practices where a students’ race or ethnicity is part of their many academic and life experiences, accomplishments and characteristics. Each applicant is reviewed individually, holistically, and without arbitrarily excluding some characteristics and experiences.
