Nearly four months after an 18-year-old entered Robb Elementary School in Uvalde and killed 19 children and two teachers with an AR-15-style weapon, a similar firearm was to be raffled as a fundraiser by the South Montgomery Girls Softball League.

advertising that each raffle ticket"will get you a chance to win the grand prize of a $1,400 gift certificate to Spring Gun & Ammo or a $600 gift certificate to Spring Gun & Ammo."

“It would be one thing if they were raffling off a hunting rifle, it’s about to be hunting season,” Jessica England, a mother who's daughter is in the league, told KRPC Channel 2. “This a semi-automatic Smith and Wesson AR-15 style rifle, one of those big scary-looking guns. In a statement sent to Channel 2, the league said that a gun raffle is legal and common practice, adding that all winners must pass a background check before receiving any prize. League officials at that time did not acknowledge that the nature of the fundraiser would change from raffling specific weapons to gun-store gift certificates.
