COVID-19 has caused many families to rethink their lifestyles, and encouraged some in the education sector to rethink the traditional model of education and who it best serves.
"When [the kids] get to high school and there is that shortage, it is a real concern because subjects become limited," Ms Holt says. Tyler, 13, completes lessons via Zoom from his home in Clermont. He has one lesson for each subject followed by a tutorial later in the week. However, in a statement from the Department of Distance Education, a spokesperson says enrolments have been consistent with past years, and COVID has had no noticeable impact.Karen Chegwidden from the Home Education Association says Queensland has the highest increase in home school enrolments in the country.
"There's a whole group of people who just fell in love with the lifestyle that home education offers and decided that they wanted to continue that," she says.
