ICYMI - Jesse Kline: Ford government calls the teachers’ bluff

With job action on the part of Ontario’s teachers’ unions entering its fourth month, students and their parents are feeling the pain. Each week, parents are forced to figure out whether their children will get caught up in the complex web of rotating strikes taking place throughout the province.

Last year, Ontario’s Progressive Conservative government announced it would be increasing high school class sizes to 28 from 22 and requiring students to take four mandatory online courses. The unions balked at this suggestion, so Education Minister Stephen Lecce said he would cap average class sizes at 25 and only require two online courses. The result? The unions ramped up their job actions, still insisting that this dispute was not simply about money.

More importantly, we’ve reached a point where parents no longer care how this deal is negotiated. They just want the two sides to come to an agreement so their kids don’t miss too much class time and they don’t have to worry about finding alternative arrangements for their children, in order for them to go to work and put food on the table.

Wow! This article is completely one sided. Is the reporter best friends with Lecce? What about all the cuts to EAs and programs for special needs? What about the Studies that show most children do not learn with online studies. To say teachers dont care and Fords does is a farce.

No he didn’t actually.

fordnation If teachers worked 48 - 50 weeks a year like the rest of us, surely we could reduce class size and the need for online learning. If they don’t like these terms, they should find another job.

The union has done a great job of supporting the most entitled workforce in Ontario. They are holding our children’s learning hostage, so why on earth do they need to compromise on anything they ask for?

there's no bluff. have you been pita adding attention to the news. wakey. wakey

Hold the line fuck them

American owned National Post hates our teachers. Not surprised.

Lock the teachers out

Its obviously still a game for Lecce. I dont trust him further than I could throw him...

Replace them, show them how worthless they are

If you paid the greedy fuckers a million dollars a year, they would accept a class of 50 students knowing none of them will learn anything. It's been like this for decades...unions want more money...teachers do their dirty work with $ as their motivator. SHAME! Disgrace!

None of the changes Lecce discussed in front of the media have been tabled during negotiations. Teachers can’t accept a non-existent offer.

Yeah, the teachers will look like the greedy people they are if money becomes the issue. Ford has the teachers by the short and curlies now! LOL

teachers... more like WHINERS....

Of course you would see it that way Fox Post!

'It is hard to avoid the conclusion that the unions care more about their own self-interest, rather than the welfare of Ontario students.' These teachers unions don't give a shit about the students. 4 months? I'd be home schooling.

“Look at how great we are at negotiating! We made multiple ideas that were incredibly stupid and we’ve backed off on all of them! You get nothing new but why aren’t you happy?”
