In its effort to reduce the street begging, the Kebbi State Government has earmarked N70 per meal for the feeding of the almajiris and would engage 504 Quran schools into the World Bank integrated programme, with a N500, 000 would be given to each selected school as a takeoff grant, including feeding and writing materials.
Addressing newsmen yesterday at the one-day sensitisation programme organised for the Islamic teachers from the different schools across the state, held at the Abdulahi Fodio School, the Executive Secretary of the Universe Basic Education, Hajiya Asumau, said the programme is in collaboration with the federal government and World Bank to streamline Quran education.
Asumau emphasised that 504 facilitators would also be attached to each school to give them both Western and Arabic education, as “government wants to bring sanity to the Quran schools and reduce street begging and reduce poverty among the children. “As you know, Governor Atiku Bagudu has passion for the children and initiated this to curb the almajiri street begging. He wants them to also have Western education.”
In his remarked, the Emir of Gwandu, represented by the Waziri Gwandu, thanked the governor for bringing the programme to the state, adding that it would be a long way in reducing the street begging.Hassan Umar, commended the federal, state governments and World Bank for their initiative in supporting education in the state, saying: “The programme will actually bring changes to the Quran schools and curb the high rate of children out of schools.
