TORONTO -- Woolly Mammoths may have developed a slew of genetic defects that potentially caused the extinction of a herd found near Siberia, according to a new study.

The study was published in the journal of Genome Biology and Evolution, a publication of Oxford University Press. The study notes that an isolated population of mammoths ended up on Wrangel Island due to rising sea levels and lack of freshwater, however, the herd died approximately 5,000 years ago and the exact cause of their demise was unknown.
