Ontario’s public school teachers are already well compensated. If they’re worried about the future of education, they should sit down with the government and hammer out a deal

They are Canada’s highest paid. They enjoy secure pensions and generous benefits, both of which are increasingly rare outside the public service. They have summers off and numerous winter breaks, as well as the opportunity to retire early with a solid income. For the most part, they enjoy high public esteem.

Teachers themselves may be dedicated professionals with deep concern for students and respect for learning, but they have long since ceded contract authority to their unions. Requests to authorize walkouts over whatever issue is currently deemed intolerable are overwhelmingly approved. Those who may hold personal doubts know better than to challenge the powers that be. Thus, Ontario’s teachers are once again involved in “job action,” which involves not carrying out many of their usual duties.

The teachers have some valid concerns. Cutting costs can endanger non-academic courses and resources for students with special needs. Today’s teachers are expected to deal with students struggling with a wide array of social, health and personal challenges. The days when they could limit their time to reading, writing and arithmetic are long gone.

You should be ashamed of yourselves.

so says the mouthpieces for the corrupt lying Ford govt. stop giving these shites taxpayer's money

Agree - striking should be illegal for this essential service! For our kids future we need to stop this nonsense. The teachers and their union have clearly abused the privaleges they have had for their own gain, at the expense of our kids and tax payers.

Teachers are professionals. How much should they earn? And why shldnt they get a cost of living increase? Everyone shld get that otherwise they are losing money.

Move all PD days to the summer after school ends

Yes and time that taxpayers are afforded the exact same benefits and pension as our employees (teachers government workers cops etc etc)

fire them rehire people who want to work

Who wrote this garbage?

Where is the research for this article? No agreement has been met between the union and Stephen Lecce so no, wages are not what's left on the table. And why haven't you mentioned that the main issue is also violence in the classroom? I'm disappointed by the lack of research...

What about the 66% of us who support them? I am not a teacher but I value all they do. I am a parent & I volunteer at the school, I see the conditions. They are fighting for our kids future. For class size reductions, special needs funding. I support teachers right to strike.

Indeed

Or... listen to teachers when they ask for better funding for your children's education.

Joining the union should be Optional, and not Mandatory upon accepting a teaching job. Teachers should be able to opt-out of being in a union.

GetBackToWork

About time someone said it. The teacher's unions are pigs at the trough.

I hear so many teachers complaining about their lost wages due to the strikes. Hello? You voted overwhelmingly in favour of a strike mandate. Was it a bluff?

What a surprise from an American owned anti-union paper. Keep sucking up to Doug.

I know 5 teachers in my live, mom, sis, aunt, best friend and his mom. Next time you go yell at a teacher about you kid needs to repeat a grade, and how you think the teacher is out to get em. That crap there is why they deserve higher wages. Same goes for when a kid hits a teacher

This 'right' to strike is being abused regularly. It is actually not a 'right' at all, but a government-granted privilege.

These teachers are holding the parents and kids hostage, think of all of the lost money and productivity because parents needed to either take time off or pay someone to look after their kids. Put an end to their temper tantrum and legislate them back to work.

Over the last few decades there’s been a huge change in our schools. Children are acting out violently, being passed to the next grade even if they aren’t ready, and graduating less capable then ever to enter the working world. Did teachers ever strike over any of this?

You forgot about the penalties or fines for crossing a picket line. Even if it was to support your family

Neither the US Constitution or Canada’s Charter guarantees the right to an education. The unions and public teachers ARE guaranteed funding, through a bottomless bit of taxpayer dollars. On top of that, BTW legislation might be unconstitutional.

I support the teacher's righttostrike

2nd line: Ontario teachers are Canada's highest paid! Me: looks at stats canada source provided. Also me: sees they're not the highest paid. Still me: closes article....

Essential Service with NO arbitration.

But But Its4TheKids Honest 💰💰💰

Enjoy the increased costs of binding arbitration and the generous salary increases that accrue to essential services!

What about the union? Think of the UNION!...opps...I mean children (insert standard rhetoric here). By the way TSB, Chief is a Latin word. How much did you waste on that virtual signalling nonsense?

Disagree. I think the goal should be to break the teachers' unions.
