File photo.The portfolio committee on higher education, science and technology has called on minister Blade Nzimande to commission an inquiry into the remuneration of university vice-chancellors .
The second highest paid VC was Tshilidzi Marwala of the University of Johannesburg, who earned an annual income of R4.9m, followed by Stellenbosch University's Wim de Villiers, who earned R100K less. Mapulane said these salaries were too high, adding it was high time universities were held to account for how they utilised their finances since they received hundreds of millions of rands in government grants.

If you pay CEO of Eskom R8m p/a, surely you should be able to pay vice chancellors R4m to R5m p/a. What is wrong with that? We have a broken country because of how we pay our educators, nurses and police 🙈.
