Parents can cut the cost of school uniform to less than £1 with Facebook exchange groups

PARENTS are turning to school uniform exchange Facebook groups to help with the cost of kitting out children for the start of the new term.Parents are struggling to afford the cost of new uniforms to send kids back to school, more than a quarter of schools in the UK require three or more items to have the school's badge or logo on them.

One mum-of-five, Natalie Lek, from Blackburn has set up a swap shop for parents to trade outgrown uniforms, according toShe set up the scheme with volunteers from The Launch Project, a charity in Manchester which she runs to help the homeless community.Parents can pay £1.50 for a full uniform set in excellent condition or £1 if its in good condition.She is one of the thousands of parents getting involved in school uniform exchanges, with hundreds of local groups on Facebook.

The question is whether the direction it undermines the education system overall. Many can’t afford £3k p.a. fees. Will this lead to a 2 tier system? As long as they don’t have charitable status, you can’t tell people how they should spend their money. We need a properly funded public education system though.
