Washington Sen. Elizabeth Warren announced Monday that if elected president, she would choose a former public school teacher to lead the Department of Education.
In making the pledge, which came in an email to her supporters, the Democratic presidential candidate took aim at President Donald Trump's secretary of education, Betsy DeVos, who Democrats have criticized for promoting charter schools and for-profit colleges. Devos' lack of public education experience drew criticism from Warren and public school advocates during her confirmation hearing. "I'll just be blunt: Betsy DeVos is the worst Secretary of Education we've seen.

The province of Ontario had a premier for many years who was also a minister in the TDSB. Our education system is a mess and she was booted from office by a huge majority. Careful what you wish for.

Not a good idea. I'm a former public school teacher, retired now after 33 years of teaching, and I know I wouldn't be qualified to run the Department of Education. Having a group of public school teachers to advise the head of the department might be a better idea.

This seems reasonable enough. They are on the ground level & daily see the fallout of a failing system. Unfortunately this is no way guarantees they know how to run a city or national school system. This will backfire in every way except salary, which doesn't address the quality.

You don't have to like her or her policies, but having someone with *actual* knowledge of education and a background in it running the Dept. of Ed is actually a good idea. In the state I teach in, the governor reappropriated funds for ed. We need someone to help ed. Not hurt it

Common sense....exactly what we need. Exactly what we are missing today. No way can an individual who has never been part of the public school system preside over the Department of Education.
How about we stick with appointment people who PAY the taxes, not people who are just really good at spending them. Our current department of education has been a good steward of my tax dollars.
