Opinion writer Miranda Devine has defended The Daily Telegraph’s front-page story on Bill Shorten, which accuses him of politicising his mother’s life story to make a point about access to education. Appearing on Q&A on Monday night, Mr Shorten described his mother as a teacher who always wanted to become a lawyer, but had to take a teaching scholarship to support her siblings.

The Opposition leader said his mother’s life story motivated him to ensure all Australians could pursue their career of choice regardless of socioeconomic status. Ms Devine has told Sky News that ‘all we’ve done on the front page is point out a glaring omission from Bill Shorten’s own narrative’. ‘It’s all very plausible until you find out that she was a lawyer,’ she says. Ms Devine has slammed the Labor Leader for ‘posing as a working class boy made good’.
