A new interim superintendent, Demario Strickland, is now leading the Rochester City School District ."The best thing that I’m looking forward to is really now showing outwardly my passion to the community," said Strickland. "I’ve garnered a lot of respect from the teachers, from school leaders because I’m out here."
13WHAM sat down with him for the first time for a one-on-one interview on Tuesday during his second day on the job.Strickland has been with the district since 2021 when he served as chief of schools before he became deputy superintendent of teaching and learning in 2023. His experience in education dates back to 2006 when he taught fifth grade in Brooklyn. Since then, he has served in other urban settings and leadership roles, including as principal of the Buffalo City School District.
Strickland was named to the role following the announcement of the previous superintendent Dr. Carmine Peluso's departure to lead the Churchville-Chili Central School District."We still have a long way to go, but the strategic plan is now set," explained Strickland. "The reconfiguration is now set. We know where we are in terms of ELA and math. We have our priorities that are identified in our strategic plan.
"I love going into schools," he said. "I love sitting with the kids and talking to the kids about what’s happening in these buildings and that gives me a lot of solace.
