It is widely understood that the pandemic negatively impacted student learning, with California students experiencing 4 percent to 5 percent regressions in proficiency in English language arts and math from.

The situation is most dire for students who never experienced pandemic learning at all — our state’s kindergartners. Someof kindergarten students were chronically absent in 2022-2023. When accounting for students of socioeconomically disadvantaged backgrounds, the rate is even higher — which assesses students at the end of fourth, eighth and 12th grades in math and reading, examined the connection between the post-pandemic rise in absenteeism and concurrent drops in student achievement.

Soaring chronic absenteeism brings the very real possibility of soaring dropout rates five, 10, 15 years down the line, which will come with a vast economic and social cost. Every educator I know hesitates to take time off, worrying about how their doctor’s appointment or sick day will impact student learning. We need to return to a culture that takes student absences just as seriously and works with families to get all students, regardless of grade, race or socioeconomic status, into school.
