Without prior warning, student visa application fees rose from $710 to $1600, in a move Home Affairs Minister Clare O’Neil said would “clean up” the sector.

International students have been slugged with a 125 per cent increase in non-refundable visa application fees as the government ramps up its efforts to curtail temporary migration numbers.

The strong return of international students, backpackers and other temporary migrants following the pandemic pushed net overseas migration to record levels.but did not occur, makes Australia by far the most expensive country to apply for a visa and is expected to dramatically further curtail applications.

Home Affairs Minister Clare O’Neil said the increase in fees would help “clean up” the international education sector. “The changes coming into force today will help restore integrity to our international education system, and create a migration system which is fairer, smaller and better able to deliver for Australia.”However, migration expert Abul Rizvi described the decision as “really poor policy” that will do little to deter those most determined to enter the country on a student visa, particularly those with perverse motivations.
