Already a subscriber? At first, I put it down to typical foreigner-abroad clannishness: all the Chinese students filing into my feature writing tutorial had probably conspired to enrol in the same 9am Friday group for moral and social support, I mused.
A surge in youth unemployment to three times the overall rate, and a shift in economic priorities in China, sent hundreds of thousands of young university graduates to mainly English-speaking countries to improve both their language skills and job prospects back home via a post-graduate degree.
Not so the Chinese students, whose attendance rates were almost impeccable, even if it was difficult at first to generate the sort of noisy debate that comes with deep learning. I remember my own apprehension at speaking up in social settings when studying Spanish, so understood their silence. It took a while, but I also noticed they were more responsive to discussion when they could relate directly to the examples – in this case well-written and topical feature stories – and other teaching material. This sounds obvious, but as a bus-in, bus-out casual with a full-time day job you’re not looking to shake up the slide decks and lesson plans carefully curated by unit conveners.
