Teaching reading using phonics, which is to be mandatory for state schools, has received strong praise from this primary school in Melbourne’s south-east.

The 700-student school in Melbourne’s south-east says teaching phonics helped make it the state’s best performing government school on NAPLAN scores last year, with an average score of 580.2.

The academic results are clear, but Gallagher said the approach also helped empower children to learn. “The department needs to improve the manner in which it consults schools, and a school like ours that is doing very well and has a phonics approach was not consulted at all.” Dalgleish said he didn’t like the term “reading wars” because the conversation needed to follow the research.
