Recently released high school STAAR test scores show most San Antonio-area districts holding steady or improving their passing rates. Only the English I test saw declines in a majority of the districts. Students must pass five end-of-course exams covering U.S. History, Biology, Algebra I, English I and English II before they can receive their diploma. Their scores are categorized as mastering or meeting expectations, “approaches expectations” or not meeting expectations.
Even in districts where Algebra I scores are higher than the state average, like Northside and North East ISDs, passing rates remain far lower than in 2019. Some schools are struggling across subjects to reach pre-pandemic scores. Though South San Antonio ISD was one of only two area districts to improve or maintain passing rates in each of the five EOC tests this year compared to 2023, the district hasn’t caught up with its pre-pandemic performance in four of them.
