Teachers 'paying for resources out of own money'

The survey comes as about 7,000 head teachers in England wrote to parents before the Easter holidays highlighting what they call a"funding crisis"."We are told there is no money for anything, all departmental budgets have been frozen and all the stockrooms are empty," one teacher responded in the study.

"We cannot afford for items to be lost - so we deprive students of the chance for self-directed study for those who are motivated." One teacher said:"The worst thing to experience as a teacher is watching a hungry child who is in receipt of free school meals, having to stand and watch their friends eat breakfast before school or have snacks at morning break when they are hungry.

"Teachers care deeply about the pupils they teach and will go to great lengths to ensure their needs are being met," she said. "However, we recognise the budgeting challenges schools face and have introduced a wide range of practical support to help schools and head teachers make the most of every pound on non-staff costs."

This government needs to go

Not helping you know. If you as teachers fill the gap no one else will.

That's the British government for you, would rather spend our money dropping bombs on Yemen children than providing excellent 1st world education for ours. It's a bloody disgrace and embarrassing. Sick and tired of negative MainstreamMedia FakeNews too!

They've Been doing this since 2005 to my knowledge. Probably before this!

MichaelRosenYes I’ve been doing this for over 3 decades! Could have retired by now if I hadn’t spent a fortune supplementing classroom resources and enriching the narrow curriculum

Good.

Very beautiful must always be like this teachers

My sister, a primary school teacher, has been buying stationary, pens, paper, books for her children for many years. She also buys fruit daily for the kids since school meals were discontinued.

It’s been going on for decades . I started training in 1973 and must have spent thousands over the years buying resources. I’m retired now but the present generation of teachers are still doing it.

Whatever happened to effective PTAs?

Rubbish

They also give up some of their limited “spare time” to collect discarded items to repurpose and reuse in their schools...

Imagine if Congress was told that they had to pay for ANYTHING work related. Something for them to think about as they get chauffeured back to their high-rise penthouses and hilltop mansions...

I’ve helped out my local school on many occasions, it’s just what you do really when they are teaching your kids, budgets are tight so making things easier is just common sense (if you can).

It’s been happening for years. Spare uniform, clean pants and much needed breakfasts given by school, resources paid for by teachers.

ItsMeAnthea_ This is nothing new 🙄

Here in Brazil we buy materials, pay for the Internet connection and sometimes gather to buy food or pay students' bills.

And the government put out the same pathetic response about putting more money in etc etc. They are so detatched from the world we inhabit.

And it’s only been found out !!!....my salary was constantly eroded by buying “essentials” for the curriculum

Unacceptable, but sadly not new. I was buying resources, additional books etc in the 1980s

I quite often used to buy resources when I was a teacher, didn’t even think about it just did it!

How true is this? Please provide your receipts and we'll send on to the education department for their appraisal!

These schools need to get a decent business manager in place then. Someone who has been trained to run a business. Many headteachers think they are business people but they were trained to teach kids.

Meanwhile we provide money to help rebuild a building burnt by some dodgy French wiring

This has been happening for years but never publicly acknowledged. Teachers & support staff going into town at weekends to buy pencils, crayons, resources like salt, sugar, sand etc for science experiments for 30 pupils. The list goes on & most don’t ask to get their money back.

Old news! They also work numerous hours free of charge, but does this Tory government care?

Teachers have been doing this for years.

How is this new news? Been happening since I trained to teach in 2000-2001.

Been happening for years. Teachers always buying boxes of pens and stationary at least once a month since like 2008

The Tories give millions to schools so they say .Or MPs tell lies again 🤔

WestCountrySuzi DamianHinds Take a look at this issue right now Enough is enough Shameful

SaveOurSchools, Education4Everyone

Nothing new here my gran did the same 50+ years ago!

Have been doing this for 32 years. Not breaking news. However glad it is put there. Not many jobs involve you spending just so the children get the experience ie cooking, making, creating

Yes and I top up my materials and equipment out of my own money when necessary- NHS desperately underfunded/ corporate profits come first

Many teachers do this as it’s simply more practical to get the things they need to do their job. Department budgets are very limited and the bureaucracy of ordering through school system mean teachers opt for buying their own resources. They only have to justify it to themselves.

MichaelRosenYes This has been happening forever. If teachers stopped doing this the whole system would collapse in days.

This is old news. It's been going on for years, I was bringing in stuff for schools I was on placement at in 1997. It wasn't my responsibility to but i did all the same.

Have been for years and I’m part time!

I have always said, teaching is the most underrated and unappreciated profession on the planet today. It’s very sad but it’s a fact.

MichaelRosenYes This is news!!! We’re just expected to do this!!!

They did that when I was at school 40 years ago, it’s not a new story

And the government needs to resign.

But probably not teachers of pupils who look like the ones in your stock photo.

DONT WORRY ABOUT THIS ALL YOU HAVE TO DO IS SEND YOUR RECIEPTS TO NUMBER 10, THEY WILL REFUND ALL PLUS A LITTLE EXTRA THAT THEY HAVE FIDDLED!!!

So do TA:s...

True story! Happens all the time!

I was a motor vehicle technician and I spent over £30k of my own money on tools just to earn my own living

Not just teachers, support staff too. It’s been happening for years. It’s the same all across the country, but it’s ok, the gov are going to let us have some money for treats soon... 🙄😣

I'm a Yr 1 TA my teacher is always buying things for the classroom out of her own money. Maybe some things aren't necessary for learning, but they are always useful and make the classroom a better place to be.

Nothing new here. I did it for 23 years.

Oh here comes the excuses. Some schools waste a lot of money but they don’t get mentioned. Some schools spend thousands on pretty devices and don’t get mentioned. Schools are part of the reason for this educational mess and yes that includes teachers.

Been happening for years!

Think it is way more than 1 in 5. Thing is, at least is makes sure the parents can afford the fags, fake suntans and data contracts.

And some NHS staff too !

Always happened, it's not new news

My last teaching job, which was part time, I was provided with a class room with tables and chairs and that was all. I even had to provide my own paper for the photocopier. I only stayed there a year. For £68 a week it just wasn't worth the hassle

My lad as a NQT told me the things he had bought and never reimbursed. Unbelievable that government can spend millions getting ready for a nodealbrexit BUT take that option off the table. Millions that could have been better spent on our NHS and schools & homeless

You just use Ikea pencils and Argos biros..

Those that deny this happens do so because such kindness is so far removed from their behaviour that they literally cannot imagine it.

MichaelRosenYes Yep. I buy things for my class all the time. If I don’t, we don’t have the things we need. Especially now that schools are struggling to keep all of their staff due to budget cuts.

MichaelRosenYes How is this news? Been doing this for my entire 20 year teaching career....

That's nothing new!

It also applies to NHS staff as well buying resources out of their own pocket to get the job done.

News?

This is not a new thing in any way...

My kids school has lost over £300, per pupil ,not only are the kids short of resources they are now short of teachers, country found billions when the banking toffs needed bailing, but when the poor can't eat or learn the stream runs dry

Our child’s Senior school is also asking for a ‘voluntary contribution’ of £15 per child this September in the hopes of being able to continue to run activities 😕

Nothing wrong with Victorian values and my friend Mr D has just published a book showing how they can work to everyone's advantage, even today. Hard Times is available in all good bookshops now... but not school libraries, obviously.

Maybe look at those schools currently spending tens of thousands on iPads which are unproven to benefit teaching and learning. Not to mention buying staff laptops and phones.

Those who can, do. Those who can’t, teach.

The question your not asking is the growth in pupils and why that is happening.

No body mentions the helpers who look after the disabled for not much more than minimum pay

True!

This is nothing new. My sister used to have to buy pencils etc. out of pocket. If I went on a course/conference, I was under orders to collect discarded pencils at the end. She's been out of teaching 15 years now.

Almost everyone in the public sector does this, NHS, social workers, engineers, you name it

Bet you believe in the tooth fairy as well

MichaelRosenYes In my last school I was buying pens, pencils, white boards, marker pens etc for the kids. I felt like opening a Business Account at Rymans.

Don't believe it .

Which schools, where? They are not using their budgets correctly and the finance governors are not making the HT accountable. Is pupil premium money, IFSM and PE funding being spent correctly. Who is actually looking at the finances correctly?

If you haven't worked in a school you should try a day volunteering and see for yourself our hand to mouth existence.

And other NHS professionals

bet you'll never see an SLT put their hand in their own, bulging pocket

When I was teaching 10 years ago we had an equipment budget of £3 per pupil per year, to cover textbooks, photocopying, you name it. Everybody dipped into their own pockets.

You should look into what social workers put out of pocket.

My wife's a TA in a special needs school and has been doing this for years on and off. Even took our kids old toys in that were in the loft coz the school's that run down.

Very true. Hell, one of the places I know installed a washing machine due to multiple children showing up with clothes that were stained from snot, paint and some other bodily fluids. Absolutely appalling. Real term funding for education has gone DOWN, not up!

Teachers need to strike, this is ridiculous.

Makes a change from Kids paying for the Teachers Ski Holidays 🤔

So what’s new!!! It’s been this way for many years it’s now grown to include food and clothes for some pupils just to get and keep them in school .

Nonsense

No.

Nah...just having another 'NUTters' rant...!

Because they can’t budget . I worked in a school for 4 years . They do little reasearch into what they are buying without even considering that they are getting ripped off by the supplier. We saved 40% of budget by cutting out the supplier and shopping around

Yup. All of the time

Yep they certainly do and have for years

Been happening for years

big society

I think you'll find they're feeding kids too
