ANCHORAGE, Alaska - Years of sometimes contentious discussion over what to do about the future of Inlet View Elementary School came to an end Monday as officials broke ground on a new $50 million dollar school just south of the existing school.
“This project faced every kind of adversity imaginable,” Rep. Zack Fields said at the podium. “And it was the passion and tenacity of parents and teachers that overcame every single one of those obstacles.” As the district announced it was closing and consolidating schools with low attendance, some questioned why it was spending so much to build a new school near downtown. School Board President Andy Holleman said Inlet View is full and could benefit from a bigger building. He said there were not schools nearby that could accommodate its students.
When voters finally approved bonds to build the new school in April there was further disagreement about where on the site it should go. Eventually a design committee won out with the plan to build it to the south of the exiting school.
