PALMER, Alaska - The Matanuska-Susitna Borough School District board voted on Wednesday night to eliminate the Student Advisory Board Representative position in a 6-1 vote.to BP 9110 passed early Wednesday, with only one board member voting against it — Ted Swanson. For many, the move is seen as further limiting the role of students in public meetings — though it comes with a new route for student input.
No board members spoke publicly on their reasoning behind the decision, but the controversial change has seen ample public testimony. But at Wednesday night’s lightly-attended meeting of the board, just two people testified against the role’s elimination, with a Student Advisory Board representative and parent speaking to the role’s significance.
Bell emphasized that regardless of the decision made on BP 9110, the Student Advisory Board will continue to advocate for students’ voices and concerns. “These, after all, are students who are elected by their peers,” McChargue said, “just as you and other representatives are elected by the people they represent. Give them the opportunity to present their concerns and their feelings, their ideas to every meeting.”
