Garland ISD announced Wednesday afternoon that school is canceled for all students Thursday, and for the rest of the year., the school district concluded the 2023-2024 academic year early with no make-up days or end-of-year celebrations, save high school graduation.“The challenges posed by the recent weather have made it impractical for campuses to continue with school,” the announcement stated.
Stephanie Rodriguez, a mother of a GISD fifth grader, said her daughter has been in tears since the announcement. “The early closure prevents the kids from having their own closure from fifth grade,” she said. “The kids aren’t all going to the same middle school and they don’t even get to say goodbye or get to have a picture of their school friends together one last time.”Rodriguez said she hopes to get in contact with other parents of fifth graders to host a graduation ceremony of their own.“We could meet in a park, parking lot or even get funds together to rent a room somewhere,” she said.
In its announcement, GISD noted that this decision, while not easy, was made in the best interest of its students, staff and community members. “We understand that this news may be disappointing, especially for our students who have worked hard throughout the year and were looking forward to these special events,” the announcement stated. “Please know that this decision was not made lightly.”
