A former pope has blamed sex abuse by Catholic clergy on the effects of the sexual revolution of the ‘60s.
The German-born Benedict, who for 23 years headed the Vatican doctrinal office that has been widely criticized for its handling of sex-abuse cases, argues that the sexual revolution led some to believe that pedophilia and pornography were acceptable. The former pope said that the spread of explicit sex education for schoolchildren and nudity in advertising had contributed to a loosening of moral bearings. He bemoaned how some seminaries had an openly gay culture and thus failed to train priests properly.

The sixties were a time when our views on sexuality changed but the fault with was their inability to see its impact on their teaching. People wanted to express their sexuality without having children.
