The decision comes after protests by some students and alumni who say the name is insulting to Indigenous people.

McGill University will no longer use the name Redmen for its sports teams, university president Suzanne Fortier announced Friday, following longstanding complaints by students and Indigenous groups that the name was derogatory, hurtful and perpetuated racial stereotypes. The university will set up a committee to work on choosing a new name for its men’s varsity teams. The new name will be in place for the 2020-2021 athletic year.

To them, removing the name would amount to a “misdirected and symbolic gesture” and erase nearly a century of history and accomplishments of generations of student athletes who wore the name with pride.“I have learned about the true depths of the pride that our student athletes and alumni feel for the rich tradition and history of varsity sports at McGill,” she said.

“Intention, however benign, does not negate prejudicial effect. Inclusion and respect are at the core of our university’s principles and values. Pejoratives run contrary to who we are as a community. “It’s been a long time coming,” Johnson-Castle said. “At this point, McGill University is 30 years behind. This is not exactly praiseworthy to do the right thing that students have been asking for seven months.”

wonder how much they paid him to hold up the sign?

The McGill ‘who gives a shits’.

Change the name to Cis White men. This is the most terrifying name I can think of (if I got my woke terminology right).

The mcgillu “Savages” has a way better ring to it anyways... definitely more scary for the teams opposing them.
