Schools and sports teams across North America have long wrestled with the legacy of Indigenous team names that many in those communities found offensive. McGill was late among universities to resolving the debate because the name was originally a reference to team uniform colours

. Indigenous connotations and racist symbolism were added starting in the 1940s and the university started trying to erase them in the 1990s.

“Today, ‘Redmen’ is widely acknowledged as an offensive term for Indigenous peoples, as evidenced by major English dictionaries,” she wrote. “While this derogatory meaning of the word does not reflect the beliefs of generations of McGill athletes who have proudly competed wearing the university’s colours, we cannot ignore this contemporary understanding.”

Already in 1953, McGill archives showed some students objecting to racist use of Indigenous imagery, according to Ms. Morton.
