Anya Lewis, a Black 11th-grader at Central Dauphin, summed it up this way: “We don’t feel cared for; we don’t feel respected; we don’t feel loved at this school.” Many of the students who spoke believe Justin Johnson was a victim of racist hazing because of the abuse they say students of color endure daily from their classmates.
Bear in mind, middle and high school experiences are crucial in helping young people develop self-esteem and confidence. These students say their self-esteem is being undermined daily by both students and teachers. “My son has endured racial discrimination,” she said bluntly. He’s suffered more in the locker room with his white teammate, she said, than he ever did on the football field against the opposing team.
The Pennsylvania Human Relations Commission is ready to offer its resources to help the district address the serious racial issues students identified. It would be a grave mistake to think this all will pass over and the district will return to business as usual.
