An Australian high school has installed a 'cage'' for autistic students, which parents say is “taking away from their (children’s) humanity,” and compared it to jail.

Parents have called the structure, which was built about a month ago, a “cage” that is “taking away from their humanity”.

Julian and Kate Edwards, whose children attend the school, said they decided to speak to the ABC because their complaints to the school were being ignored. Inside the fenced off area, the small group of teens has no access to toilets or a drinking fountain. Mr Edwards said the children were being isolated and separated from their peers unnecessarily.

This only shows how little understood autism is

Why no access to facilities? That seems a bit wrong. Other than that, some special needs people do need a safe space where they can’t hurt themselves or others, spikes on the top would probably rule this area from completely fulfilling that definition.

Sometimes drastic measures are required.

Those who vioent and risk acts causing injury have MUCH MORE wrong with then than simply autism. People need to focus on one problem and attribute all negatives to it, Many autistic children are quiet and gentle.

Oh it’s a fence. FakeNews

Are swimming pools ‘jails’ ?

Schools and houses have fences, what is the problem? It keeps creeps and bites animals out, and kids stay within boundary. If you don’t like, go to another school.

The mainstream school is unlikely to be an appropriate place for students with such extreme needs and behaviour problems like this. If they stopped pandering to parents with unrealistic expectations there wouldn’t be a problem

Anyone outraged by this has never seen or met an autisitc child.

A disgrace

I was shocked the other day on seeing that one of these diabolical devices had been used to separate a large group of defenceless children from discovering their humanity in a bitumen covered lane of joy.

I have family and friends with autistic children, and totally understand the need for their safety! I also know the safety of their children is the first thing they would want for their children...Is this a gage, or safe area? I need to know more, so I will ask...

Something not dissimilar occurred in a Canberra school, not so long ago.

Before too many doo gooders squeak here they might want to work a day in a school where these kids are. Violence tantrums and dangerous acts make working with these high needs students a risk every minute. Not only for teachers but other students. Not a simple solution here

The so called cage will help stop the kids from running away or on the road.

A cage? I can't comprehend the line of thinking that led to the belief that this would be acceptable.

It's for their own safety, I'd have to say. It's a good idea in the sense at least they can't run out on to the road..

'Taking away their humanity': School criticised over fenced area for students with autismA lockable fenced play area for teenagers with autism at a Hobart high school is akin to Risdon jail's freedom areas, one parent says. Typical leftists. Always crying, but have no solutions offered. Sensory rooms? They won't be the ones offering to pay for it, or just ask the government, just like every other leftist hoping for an increase in Newstart for doing nothing except drugs. Autism needs care not fences, shame on this school They have pool fences to protect children from drowning, nothing to see here.
