Parents could opt kids out of physical, mental health care at school in bill LGBTQ advocates worry could ‘out’ childrenCOLUMBUS, Ohio - An Ohio House bill that critics warn would force school employees to “out” transgender children to their parents was amended last week to require school districts to notify parents at the beginning of the year of physical and mental health care, and allow parents to withhold consent for those services.
As originally written, school officials would have to develop a policy to notify parents prior to the instruction of sexually explicit content and require them to notify parents when there’s a change to a student’s mental health. Through amendments over the last year, “sexually explicit content” became “sexuality content.
HB8 provides a process by which parents can get resolution when they believe a school employee violated the health care consent or sexuality content provisions, which can escalate to the parents requesting a hearing before the board of education. Just 118 pieces of testimony were in favor of the bills, while 52 took positions as “interested parties” who don’t support or oppose the bill but had information they want to communicate to lawmakers, Ogden said. The remaining 1,676 strongly opposed these bills, she said.
