The University of Melbourne’s vice chancellor, Duncan Maskell, will step down halfway through his second five-year term, with no firm plans for his future.
“I came here from the University of Cambridge where vice chancellors are all appointed for a seven-year term with no possible extension. It seems to work very well,” Professor Maskell said.“I’ll be 63 in May and I don’t know how much longer I will live. I just want a bit more freedom to go and do things I want to do.
“All of the biotechs that I was involved in at Cambridge have now either been sold or failed. Those opportunities have gone,” Professor Maskell said. Chancellor Jane Hansen said history would show Professor Maskell had led the university with distinction through COVID-19.“Not only did Professor Maskell ensure that the university survived, but he has ensured that it has continued to advance its teaching and research excellence and enhance its world-class reputation.”
