Colleges across the United States have been rocked by mass protests at institutions which began at Colombia University on April 17 and quickly spread to other institutions.

Students have set up camp at Sydney University on the back of pro-Palestinian encampments and demonstrations that have swept through US institutions and led to mass arrests and cancelled classes.

Sydney University students are camping out at the institution in support of pro-Palestinian protests at US colleges. On Tuesday night, an encampment sprung up at Sydney University with tents and banners covered in graffiti that read “from the river to the sea”, “Colombia First, USYD next”. Students – who were last night joined by federal Greens Senator David Shoebridge – are demanding the institution cut ties with Israeli universities and arms manufacturers.

Columbia said the encampment violated rules. Police arrested more than 100 students from the university on Thursday on charges of trespassing. Columbia and the affiliated Barnard College have suspended dozens of students involved in the protests. “I think our university is scared that thousands of students will come by if they dare touch our encampment.”

“What the students at Colombia University have done is started a wildfire of student anger, of student radicalism of rising student moving. But Executive Council of Australian Jewry co-chief executive Alex Ryvchin said the scenes from protests in the US should horrify vice chancellors, academics and students alike.

Sydney University has warned staff and students it will not hesitate to take “firm and decisive disciplinary action” should anyone be found to breach the institution’s acceptable conduct policies.“Some of you may be aware that last night a protest encampment was set up on the university’s front lawns on our Camperdown-Darlington campus,” Acting Vice-Chancellor and Provost Professor Annamarie Jagose said in an email to staff on Wednesday.
